Information for Oxford University Staff

Many may feel well-qualified to offer advice on academic careers, but perhaps feel less confident supporting those considering other sectors. The Careers Service supports students, fixed-term research staff and alumni across all disciplines, year-groups and career interests. We also support alumni

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Remind students of the Careers Service  and ask them to register their interests on the CareerConnect section of our website (such as where they want to work, what type of work, what languages they speak), and to use the site to look for vacancies.
  • Suggest the student makes an appointment with a careers adviser. Students are welcome to book an appointment at any stage of their career thinking and planning.  Whether they have no idea what they want to do or whether they are quite clear but need help to write applications and so on - all are welcome.
  • Include a link to the Careers Service website in the faculty/college homepage and some information about us in student handbooks. Our website contains a wealth of information - everything from how to get started on careers through to job options and further study in alumni data bases students can also use LinkedIn where they will find a large group of Oxford University alumni.
  • Involve the Careers Service in faculty, departmental or college activities – induction sessions or leavers fairs for example. All colleges and departments have a nominated Careers Adviser as a point of contact. Please contact us at hello@careers.ox.ac.uk for more information.
  • If students are about to graduate please remind them that they are able to access the Careers Service for life.

If you would like any further information about how to support your students please just let us know on hello@careers.ox.ac.uk

The University is committed to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. As a signatory of this agreement the University aims to support researchers to achieve a wide range of career goals. Principal Investigators (PIs) have a key role to play in fulfilling this aim through their support with the professional and career development of the research staff they manage.

Here are some ways that you can help:

  • Ensure that research staff are aware of the career strand of the Trailmap for researchers and consider using it to have more structured conversations with your fixed-term colleagues.
  • Offer your research staff the opportunity to reflect on their career aspirations through Career Development Reviews. The Researcher Hub offers useful advice for PIs on holding career-focused conversations.
  • Familiarise yourself with the extensive resources and sources of advice available to research staff through the Careers Service and encourage your staff to make use of them. Research Staff can book careers appointments to talk through their career ideas with our specialist Careers Adviser for Research Staff. They are welcome to book an appointment at any stage of their career thinking and planning. Whether aiming for academia or exploring other sectors, whether they have no idea what they want to do or are quite clear but need help to write applications and so on - all are welcome.
